Bootblacking

1. Class Description –

Bootblacking is the skill of providing care for a persons boots while they are wearing the boots. These skill are as much about human relationships as it deals with leather care. This class also covers the skills for sitting in a bootblack chair or receiving a bootblacking.

  • Classification of boots
  • How to clean, boots/leathers while a person is wearing it.
  • How to condition boots/leathers while a person is wearing it.
  • How to protect boots/leathers while a person is wearing it.
  • How to evaluate a boot.
  • How to evaluate a boot wearer.
  • This class is a lecture class with a demo of skills.
  • How to build a bootblack kit.
  • Basic leather skills is helpful.
  • How to receive a shine.
  • How to interact with the bootblack.
  • Why do people normally tip a bootblack.
  • There any no prerequisites to this class.
  • This is a base class that will help people understand other boot related class.
  • This is a Beginners class.
    How do you envision the course being delivered?

  • This class is designed work with up to 20 people attending
  • Attendees are encouraged to ask question at any time.

2. General course goals/objectives -

  • Attendee should be able to name 3 major boot makers.
  • Attendee should be able to name 3 to 5 types of boots.
  • Attendee should be able to tell the age of a boot or how much wear it has taken.
  • Attendee should have an idea of the artistic choices that are involved.
  • Attendee should know how to relate to the boot wearer.
  • Attendee should have the knowledge skill that would allow them to be able to start doing shoe shines.

3. Outline of overall course structure -

  • The class is all lecture with some question and answer.
  • Alot of the lecture is dependant on the demo.
  • This class normally takes an hour to complete.

  • There are no currently no books that will help with this class
  • There is a cost to leather care in supplies for this class no supplies are needed but the class will cover cost of supplies.
